Overview

The American Association of Insurance Services (AAIS) is the only national not-for-profit insurance advisory organization serving the US property and casualty insurance market. Founded in 1936 as The Mutual Marine Conference with a focus on inland marine insurance, AAIS has grown into a comprehensive advisory community governed by its member insurance carriers. Incorporated as a 501(c)(6) nonprofit in Delaware, AAIS operates as a licensed statistical agent in 51 US jurisdictions.

AAIS provides a comprehensive suite of advisory products including insurance forms, rating manuals, actuarial guidance, and regulatory compliance tools. The organization serves as a critical intermediary between insurance carriers and state regulators, streamlining the submission and validation of statutory data. Over 700 insurance companies of all sizes rely on AAIS for advisory services, regulatory intelligence, and data infrastructure.

In a landmark technology initiative, AAIS collaborated with IBM in 2018 to develop openIDL -- the open Insurance Data Link -- the first blockchain-based platform for secure, permissioned sharing of statistical data between insurers and regulators. Built on Hyperledger Fabric and adopted as a Linux Foundation project, openIDL represents a significant push to modernize regulatory reporting infrastructure for the P&C industry. In 2025, AAIS joined the openIDS Data Specifications Working Group, advancing open-source insurance data standards.
