ACUITY INSURANCE
Mutual property and casualty insurer with deep expertise in commercial trucking and small business
Overview
Acuity Insurance is a mutual property and casualty insurance company headquartered in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, owned by its policyholders rather than stockholders. Founded in 1925 as the Mutual Auto Insurance Company of the Town of Herman, the company underwent several name changes -- Mutual Auto of Wisconsin (1953), Heritage Mutual Insurance Company (1957) -- before adopting the Acuity brand in 2001.
Acuity surpassed USD 3 billion in annual written premium for the first time in 2024, marking its 16th consecutive year of revenue growth. In 2024 alone, the company grew nearly 20%, generating more than a USD 500 million increase in topline revenue -- an all-time record. Personal lines grew over 34% to surpass USD 820 million, while commercial lines wrote nearly USD 470 million in new business premium. By end of 2025, assets exceeded USD 8.5 billion and the company counted more than 400,000 policyholders, the highest total in company history.
As a mutual insurer, Acuity reinvests profits back into the business and policyholders rather than distributing them to shareholders. The company distributes exclusively through independent agents and is recognized by AM Best with an A+ (Superior) Financial Strength Rating -- affirmed for the 23rd consecutive year in 2025 -- and by Standard and Poor's with an A+ rating. Acuity writes approximately 75% commercial lines and 25% personal lines business, with particular depth in commercial trucking insurance.
