Overview

Ajusto is a usage-based insurance (UBI) program operated by Desjardins General Insurance Group (DGIG), one of Canada's leading property and casualty insurers and a subsidiary of Desjardins Group -- the country's largest cooperative financial group. Launched in 2013, Ajusto was among the first telematics-based auto insurance programs in Canada and one of the first of its kind globally.

In March 2015, Desjardins launched the Ajusto smartphone app -- developed in partnership with Cambridge Mobile Telematics (CMT), a firm founded by MIT professors -- becoming North America's first insurer to offer a 100% mobile, hardware-free UBI program. The app uses sensors already present in smartphones (GPS, accelerometer, gyroscope) to measure driving behavior, eliminating the need for a dongle or OBD-II device. Within 48 hours of its launch, the Ajusto app reached the Top 100 most-downloaded apps in the Canadian App Store.

In 2025, Desjardins launched a new version of Ajusto that moves beyond a one-time snapshot to continuously assess driving behavior over time, encouraging drivers to maintain safe habits on an ongoing basis. The program is now distributed through the Desjardins Insurance Home-Auto mobile app and is available to personal auto policyholders through Desjardins Insurance and The Personal in Ontario, Quebec, and Alberta.

Ajusto UBI Program

A smartphone-based telematics program that personalizes auto insurance premiums based on how -- and how much -- you drive. How It Works: 1. Enroll through the Desjardins Insurance Home-Auto mobile app 2. Receive a 10% sign-up discount immediately for the first 6 months (180 days) 3. App measures driving behavior during trips using smartphone sensors 4. After 180 days and 1,000+ km driven, a personalized score (0-100) is calculated 5. Score determines annual premium adjustment at next renewal Scoring Factors:

Key Features

  • Driving behavior: speed compliance, acceleration, braking, cellphone distraction, safe following distance
  • Driving habits: trip distance, time of day, route regularity
  • Data is never used to cancel a policy
  • Data is never used to deny renewal
  • Data is never used to increase premiums (only driving scores affect renewal adjustments)
  • Data is not used for commercial purposes beyond discount calculation
  • Trip data is uploaded via Wi-Fi only -- no mobile data charges
  • iPhone (iOS 15+) or Android (11+) smartphone
  • GPS, accelerometer, and gyroscope required
  • Huawei phones are not supported
  • Must be the primary driver of the insured vehicle
