Overview
Wellabe, Inc. (formerly American Enterprise Group, Inc.) is a Des Moines-based insurance holding company founded in 1929 as American Republic Insurance Company by Watson Powell. With nearly 97 years of history, the company survived the Great Depression and grew from 200 charter policies to a multi-state operation with six insurance subsidiaries licensed in 49 states and the District of Columbia.
In May 2023, American Enterprise Group rebranded to Wellabe -- a name derived from "we will always be" -- reflecting the company's commitment to always being there for its customers, distribution partners, and communities. The first official business day as Wellabe was June 26, 2023. The six insurance company subsidiaries retained their individual names while operating under the unified Wellabe parent brand.
Wellabe focuses on senior and supplemental health insurance markets, distributing Medicare Supplement, preneed funeral, dental, hospital indemnity, critical illness, cancer, and short-term care insurance through an independent agent network. In May 2025, AM Best affirmed an A (Excellent) Financial Strength Rating with a stable outlook for the fifth consecutive year for all six of its insurance subsidiaries.
