Overview

American Family Insurance (AmFam) is one of the largest private mutual property and casualty insurance carriers in the United States, founded on October 3, 1927 as Farmers Mutual Automobile Insurance Company by Herman Wittwer in Madison, Wisconsin. Renamed American Family Mutual Insurance Company, S.I. in 1963, the company has grown into a top-15 national P&C insurer serving approximately 12.1 million policies in force across 19 states, primarily through an exclusive independent contractor agent network of approximately 2,400 agents. The company employs approximately 10,500 people nationwide.

AmFam delivered strong financial results in 2025, with USD 19.5 billion in total revenue and USD 45.5 billion in total group assets. The company achieved a combined ratio of 84.6% for property-casualty lines in 2025, a significant improvement from 96.6% in 2024, reflecting lower catastrophe losses and improved underwriting discipline. The expense ratio of 31.9% was the lowest since 1992. Members' equity grew to USD 14.3 billion (up from USD 10.6 billion in 2024). The company is approaching its centennial anniversary in 2027.

The AmFam group includes Homesite (homeowners insurance, acquired 2013) and CONNECT powered by American Family (formerly Ameriprise Auto and Home, acquired 2019). The company sold The General to Sentry Insurance effective December 31, 2024, and exited its Main Street America Insurance Bonds business in early 2026, as part of a deliberate strategic portfolio realignment. American Family Ventures, the company's venture capital arm, has invested USD 172 million in 65+ insurtech startups over eight years with 16 successful exits, with the most recent investment being Qumis (February 2026).
