Overview
Aspen Insurance Group is a global specialty insurance and reinsurance carrier founded in 2002 and headquartered in Hamilton, Bermuda. The company writes business across specialty insurance and reinsurance lines, operating through Lloyd's Syndicate 4711, its Bermuda platform, and licensed entities in the US and UK. Aspen serves commercial enterprises, financial institutions, and specialty risk buyers worldwide, distributing through brokers and intermediaries.
In August 2025, Sompo Holdings announced a definitive agreement to acquire Aspen for USD 3.5 billion (USD 37.50 per share). The acquisition integrated Aspen's specialty insurance and reinsurance platforms into Sompo's global portfolio alongside Sompo International. Aspen continues to operate under its brand during the transition. Mark Cloutier, former CEO and Executive Chairman, moved into an advisory role; Sarah Stanford was named CEO of Sompo UK following the close.
For the full year 2024, Aspen reported gross written premiums of USD 4.6 billion (up 16.2% year-over-year), net written premiums of USD 2.9 billion, adjusted underwriting income of USD 381 million, and an adjusted combined ratio of 86.8% -- demonstrating strong underwriting discipline ahead of the acquisition.
