Auto-Owners Insurance is a Fortune 500 mutual insurance company founded in 1916 by Vern V. Moulton and four associates in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. The company relocated to Lansing, Michigan in 1917 and has been headquartered there ever since. Operating exclusively through independent agents, Auto-Owners has grown into one of the nation's largest property-casualty and life insurers, with a network of approximately 48,000 licensed agents across more than 6,300 agencies in 26 states.

The company serves approximately 3 million policyholders and has been a Fortune 500 member since 2003, ranked at number 270 on the 2025 list with annual revenue of approximately USD 15.8 billion. In 2024, Auto-Owners recorded its largest annual increase in premium of over USD 2.5 billion, with in-force policies growing by more than 389,000 to exceed 6.3 million total policies. As a mutual insurer, Auto-Owners is owned by its policyholders and has no shareholders, which supports a long-term, conservative underwriting approach.

The Auto-Owners group comprises six primary property-casualty insurers plus a life insurance subsidiary, alongside three affiliated companies: Atlantic Casualty Insurance Company (E&S lines), Concord General Mutual (New England), and Capital Insurance Group (Western states).
