BeNew Insurance
Micro-insurance for low-income earners, powered by recyclable premium payments
Overview
BeNew Insurance is a micro-insurtech carrier based in Douala, Cameroon, on a mission to provide financial guarantees to low-income earners while protecting the environment. Founded in 2022 by Newton Bezeng, BeNew operates as a licensed insurance partnership offering micro-insurance products targeting populations living below USD 5 per day across Cameroon and sub-Saharan Africa.
What sets BeNew apart is its innovative premium payment model: policyholders can pay insurance premiums by collecting and submitting recyclable plastic waste, which is converted to premium value through partnerships with recycling companies. This approach simultaneously advances financial inclusion and environmental sustainability -- making insurance accessible to communities that would otherwise be excluded from formal financial protection.
The company operates with a multidisciplinary team spanning finance, legal, IT, healthcare, engineering, and transport, with a gender composition of 43% women and 57% men. BeNew received seed funding through the Qatar FinTech Hub Wave program and has conducted pilot operations in both Cameroon and Qatar.
