Overview

The Canada Life Assurance Company is one of Canada's largest and oldest insurance and financial services companies, founded in 1847 by Hugh Cossart Baker Sr. in Hamilton, Ontario as Canada's first domestic life insurer. The modern Canada Life brand emerged on January 1, 2020 from the amalgamation of three Great-West Lifeco subsidiaries: The Great-West Life Assurance Company (founded 1891), London Life Insurance Company (founded 1874), and the original Canada Life Assurance Company (founded 1847). Canada Life is a wholly owned subsidiary of Great-West Lifeco Inc., which is majority-owned by Power Corporation of Canada.

Canada Life serves approximately 40 million customer relationships across Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Isle of Man, and Germany, supported by over 32,000 employees and more than 234,500 advisor relationships globally. Its parent Great-West Lifeco reported record base earnings of CAD 4.65 billion in 2025, with total client assets of approximately CAD 3.3 trillion.

In Canada, the company is the administrator of major federal government benefit plans including the Public Service Health Care Plan (PSHCP) and the Public Service Dental Care Plan (PSDCP), covering millions of federal public servants and retirees.
