Catlin
Specialty insurance and reinsurance leader, now operating as AXA XL -- delivering complex risk solutions across marine, aviation, property, and professional lines globally.
Overview
Catlin Group Limited was founded in 1984 by Sir Stephen Catlin as CUAL (Catlin Underwriting Agencies Limited) at Lloyd's of London. The company grew into one of the world's leading specialty insurance and reinsurance carriers, operating across Lloyd's, the US, and international markets with particular expertise in complex, hard-to-place risks including marine, aviation, property catastrophe, and professional liability.
In 1999, Catlin became the first traditional Lloyd's managing agent to incorporate a Bermuda holding company. The firm listed on the London Stock Exchange in 2004, raising nearly USD 200 million, and continued to expand its global platform through organic growth and acquisitions.
In January 2015, XL Group announced the acquisition of Catlin Group for USD 4.1 billion in cash and stock, completed in May 2015, forming XL Catlin. Subsequently, in March 2018, AXA announced it would acquire XL Group for USD 15.3 billion, completing in September 2018 to create AXA XL -- now AXA's global P&C commercial and specialty insurance division. Sir Stephen Catlin was inducted into the Insurance Hall of Fame.
