Sensible

API-first document data extraction for financial services, insurance, and logistics

Visit Website

Overview

Sensible is a document data extraction platform built for financial services, insurance, logistics, and healthcare companies. The platform converts unstructured and semi-structured documents -- PDFs, spreadsheets, images, and email attachments -- into structured, schema-validated data via a RESTful API. Target customers include carriers, MGAs, brokers, and B2B technology providers that process high volumes of insurance forms, COIs, policy documents, and financial records.

The platform uses a hybrid extraction architecture called SenseML, combining deterministic layout-based parsing rules with large language model (LLM) analysis. This approach handles both rigidly structured business forms and free-form legal documents within the same configuration framework. Sensible offers more than 150 pre-built document configurations, a multimodal engine for images and handwriting, human review tooling, agentic workflow orchestration, and batch processing capabilities. Clients integrate via REST API with SDKs for JavaScript and Python.

Sensible was co-founded in 2020 by Josh Lewis (CEO) and Ming Lu, drawing on direct experience building internal document parsing tools at Newfront Insurance. The company raised a USD 6.5M seed round in November 2022 led by Craft Ventures, with participation from Engineering Capital, Clocktower Technology Ventures, and angels including Newfront co-founders Spike Lipkin and Gordon Wintrob. Named customers include Groundspeed, Vouch, AngelList, Spruce, Inspectify, and approximately 16 other organizations across insurance and financial services.
