Overview

United States Liability Insurance Group (USLI) is a specialty insurance group headquartered in Wayne, Pennsylvania, focused on underwriting low-premium, low-hazard specialty insurance products for small businesses across the United States and Canada. Founded in 1975 by Joseph S. Mordente, USLI was acquired by Berkshire Hathaway in 2000 and has grown into one of the leading specialty admitted and surplus lines insurance groups in North America.

USLI consists of five insurance companies -- United States Liability Insurance Company, Mount Vernon Fire Insurance Company, Mount Vernon Specialty Insurance Company, Radnor Specialty Insurance Company, and U.S. Underwriters Insurance Company -- collectively providing admitted or non-admitted (surplus lines) coverage in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, with a Canadian presence through USLI Canada.

The group carries AM Best's highest financial strength rating of A++ (Superior), reaffirmed in August 2025, reflecting its superior level of capitalization (BCAR 99.6% VaR), very strong operating performance, and conservative reserving. USLI's underwriting income for the most recent year was the highest in its 10-year history, driving policyholder surplus to a record level.
