Overview

The Wholesale & Specialty Insurance Association (WSIA) is the primary trade association for the U.S. wholesale, specialty, and surplus lines insurance industry. WSIA was formed on August 1, 2017, when members of the American Association of Managing General Agents (AAMGA, established 1926) and the National Association of Professional Surplus Lines Offices (NAPSLO) voted to merge the two organizations, creating a unified voice representing nearly a century of combined heritage.

WSIA serves approximately 700+ member firms and tens of thousands of individual brokers, underwriters, and insurance company professionals across the excess and surplus (E&S) lines market. The association focuses on networking, education, talent development, and legislative and regulatory advocacy on behalf of the wholesale and specialty insurance market.

The E&S market plays a vital role in the U.S. insurance ecosystem, providing coverage for complex and hard-to-place risks that admitted carriers decline. According to WSIA mid-year 2025 data, the E&S sector saw a 13.2% rise in premium, with mid-year premium totaling USD 46.2 billion. Full-year 2024 E&S premiums surpassed USD 81 billion, demonstrating continued market expansion.
