Overview

AltumView Systems is a Canadian AI company that develops privacy-preserving activity monitoring technology for senior care and remote patient monitoring. Founded in 2016 by Dr. Jie Liang -- a Professor at Simon Fraser University and Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering -- AltumView pioneered onboard edge AI that converts human body positions into stick-figure representations before any data leaves the device, eliminating privacy concerns in bedrooms, bathrooms, and other sensitive care settings.

The company sells its Sentinare sensor both direct-to-consumer through Amazon (US and Canada) and Best Buy Canada, and via B2B enterprise partnerships with exclusive distributors across the US, Canada, UK, Finland, Australia, and Japan. With over 10 granted US patents, a reported USD 1.8M in revenue (2024), and a team of approximately 12-13 people, AltumView is a focused deep-tech startup at the intersection of AI, remote patient monitoring, and health insurance.

In 2025 the company expanded rapidly: launching cloud AI-powered health analytics in September, releasing the first fall detection solution powered by Large Vision-Language AI Models (VLM) in April, and being selected as a winner of the Keihanna Expo Global Startup PoC Challenge with a demonstration at Osaka World Expo 2025.

Products & Services

Sentinare Smart Activity Sensor (Consumer/SMB)

AltumView's flagship product -- available in multiple hardware generations (Sentinare 2 and Sentinare 3) -- is an AI-powered room sensor that monitors activity and sends caregiver alerts without ever transmitting video. An onboard AI chip converts human body positions into privacy-safe stick figures; only those stick figures are transmitted to the cloud for analysis.

Key Features

  • Fall detection (up to 6m range) with reduced false alarms via VLM (2025)
  • Activity recognition: standing, sitting, lying down, walking
  • Region-of-interest monitoring for wandering and bed-leaving alerts
  • Overstay and absence detection
  • Cloud AI anomaly detection: sleep cycle disruption, unusual inactivity, frequent bathroom visits (Sept 2025)
  • AI chatbot for customer support (Oct 2025)
  • Free mobile apps (iOS and Android) and web dashboard
  • Amazon Alexa Together integration (fall detection)

Target Users: Seniors aging in place, adult children monitoring elderly parents, long-term care facilities

Sentinare Enterprise (B2B)

The enterprise offering extends the consumer sensor with API access and integration support for healthcare providers, RPM programs, and B2B resellers.

Key Features

  • Full REST API for integration with care platforms and EMR systems
  • White-label and exclusive distribution agreements
  • Bulk deployment and fleet management
  • Data feeds compatible with remote patient monitoring billing workflows (CPT codes 99453, 99454, 99457)

Target Users: Healthcare providers, RPM program operators, long-term care operators, insurance carriers offering RPM benefits
