Overview

American Modern Insurance Group is a specialty personal lines insurer headquartered in Amelia, Ohio and a wholly owned subsidiary of Munich Re, the global reinsurance group. The company traces its corporate roots to 1938 (The Midland Company) and formalized its insurance operations in 1965 with the founding of American Modern Home Insurance Company. Munich Re acquired American Modern in 2008 as part of the broader acquisition of The Midland Company (NYSE: MLAN), integrating it into its Global Specialty Insurance division.

American Modern specializes in non-standard and specialty personal lines -- market segments where traditional carriers often decline to compete, including manufactured homes, seasonal and vacation properties, vacant dwellings, watercraft, collector vehicles, and powersports. The company writes admitted products across all 50 states through nine P&C subsidiary companies and serves approximately 1.7 million policyholders. Its subsidiaries have earned AM Best A+ (Superior) financial strength ratings and the company has been recognized by the Ward Financial Group as a Top 50 P&C performer for 13 consecutive years.

In March 2026, Kathleen O. Zortman assumed the role of CEO and President (effective March 2, 2026), succeeding Andreas Kleiner who led the company for a decade. Zortman brings over 30 years of P&C insurance leadership -- most recently as president and CEO of AIG's private client group until October 2025 -- with a focus on organizational transformation, portfolio optimization, and underwriting excellence. Under her leadership, American Modern is continuing investments in digital platforms and expanding into new specialty segments such as farm and ranch insurance.
