Overview

Brella Insurance was founded in 2019 (originally as Clara Insurance) to modernize the supplemental health insurance market. The company rebranded from Clara to Brella in 2020, and again from Brella to Ansel Health in January 2024, adopting a name meaning "protector" in German to reflect its mission of shielding members from unexpected health-related financial burdens.

Ansel provides employer-sponsored supplemental health insurance covering 13,000+ injuries and illnesses -- from concussions and fractures to cancer and appendicitis -- paying direct cash benefits to members within 72 hours of a qualifying diagnosis. Unlike traditional accident and critical illness plans, Ansel's coverage spans a far broader range of conditions (3x more than accident and critical illness plans combined) and requires no hospitalization trigger, making it simpler for both members and administrators.

In September 2025, Renaissance Life & Health Insurance Company of America announced its intent to acquire Ansel Health, completing the transaction on November 4, 2025. The combined entity continues to offer the supplemental health product under the RenSecureHealth brand and the Ansel platform, with all existing Ansel partners and members receiving uninterrupted service.
