Overview

CARFAX is the industry-standard provider of vehicle history reports and automotive data intelligence, widely used by insurance carriers to support auto claims handling, underwriting, and total loss valuation. Founded in 1984, CARFAX aggregates data from over 100,000 sources -- including state DMVs, law enforcement agencies, service facilities, and auction houses -- to build comprehensive histories on hundreds of millions of vehicles.

Within the insurance sector, CARFAX operates CARFAX for Claims and the CARFAX Banking & Insurance Group (carfaxbig.com), dedicated divisions that provide carriers with tools to streamline total loss valuation, verify vehicle condition, detect potential fraud, and accelerate claims cycle times. The CARFAX Total Loss Valuation Report, available in 48 US states and DC, has been widely adopted by insurance companies since its launch in 2020, and received a major enhancement in April 2025 to include automated calculation of taxes and fees through a partnership with Claim Toolkit.

CARFAX is a subsidiary of S&P Global within the Mobility segment. S&P Global announced in April 2025 its intent to spin off the Mobility division -- including CARFAX, automotiveMastermind, Polk Automotive Solutions, and Market Scan -- into a standalone public company called Mobility Global, Inc., expected to complete in late 2026. The Mobility segment generated USD 1.6 billion in revenue in FY2024.
